The cork tree's bark is unusually thick and splits every nine to fifteen years when it can be safely harvested causing no harm to the tree. The bark contains over 100 million tiny air pockets per cubic inch, which creates a resilient floor with a cushiony surface. These air pockets allow cork to "bounce back" in most cases and be sound absorbing with natural acoustic and thermal insulation. This makes it wonderful for multi-level housing, offices, museums, churches, or houses with kids.
