sisal

Extracts from the sisal agave plant-found mostly in Africa and with an average lifespan of 10 years-are used to create the fine and long fibers that comprise the durability and strength of sisal rugs. The naturally occurring sisal fibers are harvested several times per year with no harm to the environment.

corn

Once corn is fully matured and harvested, the corn sugar is taken and put into a fermentation process. The end product is Bio-PDO, a key ingredient in Mohawk's SmartStrand carpet. The use of corn sugar results in approximately one gallon of gasoline saved per every seven square yards of carpet.

coir

The course outer shell of the coconut provides a material called coir, which is used to make some natural fiber rugs. The fibers grow naturally and, with careful attention to the growing cycle, coir rugs can be made for years and years from the same coconut tree.

pine rosin

Without affecting their growth, rosin is taken from pine trees then combined with linseed oil and other raw materials to make linoleum. To achieve maximum waste reduction all linoleum remnants are recycled back into the production process.

bamboo

After natural bamboo is harvested (about every four years), the extensive root system remains intact, allowing for rapid regeneration. The harvested bamboo is then cut into strips and processed into eco-friendly bamboo flooring. Bamboo flooring is made specifically from the Moso species which, because of the leaves' distance from the ground, is not a food source for pandas.

flax

Seeds of the flax plant are pressed to obtain linseed oil, the most important raw material in linoleum. The oil is combined with other raw materials to form granules, which are pressed onto a jute backing, making linoleum sheets. To achieve maximum waste reduction all linoleum remnants are recycled back into the production process.

wool

After the sheep are humanely sheared and released into pasture to grow another coat, their wool is combined with other raw materials to produce wool carpet. Wool carpet improves indoor air quality, is biodegradable and non-allergenic.

cork

The bark of the cork oak tree is harvested every 7-9 years, leaving the tree and forest completely undamaged. The harvested cork is made into cork wine stoppers, then the used stoppers are made into cork flooring, making it a 100% recycled product.
