Cork and Bamboo

Cork is one of the most environmentally responsible flooring products you can choose. It is highly renewable and, a natural resource made from the bark of a Mediterranean cork oak tree, cork is also hypoallergenic and resistant to mold and mildew.

The cork tree’s bark is unusually thick and splits every nine to fifteen years when it can be safely harvested causing no harm to the tree. The bark contains over 100 million tiny air pockets per cubic inch, which creates a resilient, durable floor with a cushiony surface. These air pockets allow cork to “bounce back” in most cases and be sound absorbing with natural acoustic and thermal insulation. This makes it wonderful for multi-level housing, offices, museums, churches, or houses with kids.

With its distinctive look, cork adds textural interest that can provide an “earthy” or neutral backdrop for your individual tastes. You can make cork look funky and fun or proper and formal. Bamboo is extremely earth-friendly and an ecological alternative to wood flooring. As a matter of fact, bamboo is harder than some wood species such as red oak or maple. But bamboo is not a product of trees. It is a fast-growing grass. Unlike hardwood trees requiring more than sixty years to mature, bamboo is renewably harvested over and over from the same rootstock. In only five years, it can grow from sprout to ready for harvesting. An acre of bamboo can provide more flooring than an acre of trees.

Yet bamboo is installed and treated much like wood and now comes in a selection of different finishes and stains, all on display in our showroom. It’s also offered as an engineered product providing even greater stability. The product is dimensionally stable and suitable for high-traffic commercial as well as residential areas, making it ideal for kitchen and living areas.
