TIPS FROM TIM: Keeping Your Wood Floors Beautiful
Prefinished hardwood floors can be a beautiful addition to your home and, if properly cared for, can last a lifetime. By following these simple tips, you can maintain the beauty of your floor for many years to come.
– For general cleaning, use a damp cloth with the manufacturer’s recommended cleaner. These cleaners are mild and leave no residue on your floor. Never wet mop a wood floor. Never use a steam cleaning system on wood floors. Oil soaps, abrasive cleaners, and citrus- or acid-based cleaners are no-no’s. Ask us about a suitable wood floor cleaner for purchase here at Carpet Plus.
– Walk-off mats outside of entrances are a must. Dirt and grit are very abrasive and can cause premature wear on all types of flooring. I also recommend putting a throw rug on the inside to make sure your shoes are completely clear of dirt before walking on your wood floor.
– Keep high heels in good repair. Be aware that high heels can dent any type of wood floor.
– Use area rugs at work areas in kitchens. Be sure to avoid rugs with a vinyl or rubber backing as they may trap moisture underneath.
– Felt pads on furniture legs are essential to prevent scratches and gouges. These pads should be replaced periodically as they do wear out.
– Vacuum wood floors regularly with a brush attachment—no beater bars, please!
